What a wonderful place! Red Rock Canyon is a National Conservation Area on the western edge of Las Vegas. It was once an immense field of red sand dunes. Over time, underground water carried away much of the red color and left behind calcium carbonate, cementing the sand into rock. (Information courtesy of a sign in the canyon)
