Wandering... assisted by 2 feet, 2 wheels, & a camera!
2008-08: A tale of two
It's time for another escape... I'm headed to the Acadian coast of New Brunswick for a combination biking and hiking trip, with a 2-day stop at Acadia National Park on the way home again. Two wheels, two feet, two Acadias...

It was only a two-day escape, but it was a good one! I rode from home to Portsmouth, NH, then returned the next day.

My ever-present wanderlust will be somewhat satisfied by a late spring long weekend escape to Zion National Park.
Since Rover (yes, Rover is the little red dog in the photo! Can't your mascots write?) has volunteered to write the journal for this adventure, I thought a picture of him would be perfect here.

Acadia pulls me to the Maine coast once again for a much needed escape.

I was dreaming of a late fall escape to someplace warm when Death Valley jumped off of the map and insisted on a visit. The National Park Service description of Death Valley National Park as a land of extremes captured my imagination:
A superlative desert of streaming sand dunes, snow-capped mountains, multicolored rock layers, water-fluted canyons and three million acres of stone wilderness.

Ah, wandering with bike and camera along the Maine coast... My end points for this trip are from mid-coast Maine to Downeast Maine, including the better part of 4 days wandering in Acadia National Park.

Zion National Park reached out and grabbed me.
I was looking for a taste of summer weather in a beautiful place that was accessible via a non-stop flight, and Zion provided just the escape that I needed. A few days of hiking, good food, sunshine...

An exploration of western Nova Scotia, with a quick wander of Acadia National Park on my return to Maine. Nova Scotia is someplace I'd been looking to visit for a while. This trip covered only a small piece of the province, and as seems usual for me - I'm already planning a return trip.

Day trips in Downeast Maine. My bicycle and I wandered in Acadia National Park - both on Mount Desert Island and around the Schoodic Peninsula - as well as some territory further to the east. My bike took a rest while my camera & I visited the puffins on Machias Seal Island. Awesome!

An exploration of Prince Edward Island, with additional stops on the way home at Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick, and Acadia National Park, Maine.

Wandering on 2 wheels in Downeast Maine, this trip represents my return to touring after too long of an absence (caused by last year's unfortunate crash). Six days gave me time for a pair of loops in coastal Maine, stretching from Mt. Desert Island in the west to Jonesport in the east.

I had planned to ride in Hawaii, but my (unplanned) crash scuttled my cycling plans for the year. The Big Island was still in my head, so I switched my mode of transportation. This was a driving, hiking, and relaxing trip. And of course, the Big Island is always a wonderful travel destination.

This is the story of my recovery from my stellar bicycle crash on May 20, 2004, with the target of returning to touring as soon as possible. It's not a tour, but it is about bicycling!

Escaping from the northeast in the heart of winter is always a welcome break for me. I expected my three days in Sedona, Arizona to have a semblance of warmth, maybe a little cool, but dry. Instead, I had a day of sunshine and relative warmth, a day of rain, and a day of snow. Interesting hiking in a beautiful place.

A place I'd been thinking of visiting for a long time... I chose to wander in northern sections of Ireland and Northern Ireland, crossing back and forth across the border over the first several days of my trip, and then staying in the north. I started riding in Belcoo, and ended just north of Belfast. A quick visit of Dublin finished my tour before I flew home again.

Ever since my first visit to the Big Island, I've felt a pull, a desire to visit again. And again. And...
My first experience biking in Hawaii was on a supported tour (a couple of years prior to this one). This trip was a repeat journey from a roads standpoint, but this time I was on my own, in my usual solo, self-supported style. What a wonderful place to ride, and what a wonderful place to be let loose with a camera. And you know what? I'm going to need to return again!

Riding across the United States has been a dream of mine for a while. Why?
People keep asking me why I want to do this trip. It's really a combination of things to me: a chance to explore our country at a pace that lets me really see things, a chance to meet and interact with people who live in the areas I'll be passing through, a chance to meet other cyclists, a chance to see parts of the country that I've only dreamed of so far, and a sense of accomplishment that comes from a ride of this sort.
Please join me in my dream ride from east to west.

2001 & 2002: Red rocks and fabulous formations
Yes, you're absolutely right - I ride on roads, and I don't ride a mountain bike. But - the scenery drew me to the mountain biking mecca of Moab, accompanied by my road bike. Photos are somewhat limited since this trip was before I entered the digital camera world, but there are a sampling of photos in my journal.

This trip was intended to be a 4-week bicycle tour, but cold rainy weather forced a bit of a change. I rode a loop from Spokane into Idaho, and back to Spokane. That was followed by several days of driving across Washington, visiting the Coulee Dam and Mount Rainier, and then switching back to my preferred two-wheeled form of transportation for a straight shot down the coast from Bellingham, WA to Crescent City, CA.

My very first solo, self-supported bicycle tour! I chose the Rocky Mountains as the site of my adventure, starting by crossing the panhandle of Idaho, wandering north through Montana to Glacier National Park, crossing into Alberta & British Columbia to continue to follow the spine of the Rockies north to Jasper. A fabulous experience!
